We have this interesting item from "The San Francisco Chronicle":

If true, pretty exciting news considering this a discovery from mere legend.
From CNN News:

    CNN News:

“The theory is that when artist Giorgio Vasari created his mural "The
Battle of Marciano," he erected a brick wall in front of da Vinci's plaster
wall, effectively preserving the older masterpiece.

"They told us we were looking on the wrong wall, that it was just a legend,"
Florence Mayor Matteo Renzi said at a news conference Monday, where
researchers revealed the discovery of paint apparently matching pigment
    from Leonardo's "Mona Lisa."

Da Vinci's work was commissioned to commemorate the Republic of Florence's
victory over Milan in the battle on the plain of Anghiari in 1440. While da Vinci
was believed to have not been satisfied with the result, in which he used new
techniques, art historians said it was a much-studied masterpiece in its day.”

Again, that LINK for the Rest of the Story

Finally - a video accompaniment courtesy 'TelegraphTV':

- As stated in both articles as well the above-posted video, the preliminary finds
seem very encouraging; Pigments only of use to an artist, applied with a brush have
been found behind Vasari's fresco - upon a wall directly beyond an air-gap the artist
probably thought to include with the intent of protecting the Da Vinci.

Could be one of the greatest finds' of the 21st century.

AngelTV, This video (courtesy NTD TV) addresses that (watch the complete video):

- So, the six probe-holes which were drilled into the Vasari fresco to make the find were
only done in those areas previously restored (or) 'cracks' - - happens often with works' so aged.

I'm sure this recovery - indeed - if a recovery it is (seeming highly likely at this point), they'll have
to proceed with all the caution of an archeologist at an historically significant dig. After all, Vasari
was a master in his own right; Why destroy the work of one just so you may recover another?

That said, I'm sure this won't be without its' problems. Vasari's fresco is huge. They'll have to
determine how and where it is affixed to the former so that it may be excised - (with all the
precision of a surgeon, I should think). . .

Plaster is a very delicate thing. There are so many variables to consider. . .I've got ideas on how
it may be done, (though) I'm not even sure my way would work. That 'air gap' thing very important,
determining the amount of space in which they have to work. This is going to be a very tedious
process - We'll just have to wait and see what comes of it.

Do they have to destroy the wall? Why can it not be cut and removed intact?
